With extreme and sudden weather changes, asphalt shingles can decay. (Avoid installing them in severe cold weather.) The wind can affect the uplift of shingles and damage them if severe enough. The ventilation in your attic can actually reduce the life span of shingles.

You need to schedule a periodic maintenance with your shingles. They can decay in sudden changes of the weather.  Since they are petroleum-based products, they are not classified as environment-friendly.

Presently, there are two categories for asphalt shingles in the market. The first one is the organic shingles. They are made of paper with asphalt coating that converts them into a waterproof material.

Fiberglass shingles gives better fire protection than the organic type. Fiberglass shingles are treated with protective coating of resin that converts them as likewise ‘waterproof’ material. Among the other roofing materials, asphalt shingles appears satisfactory for many users in terms of ease, cost and aesthetics.
